Varicose Veins and Venous Disorders

There are a variety of promising treatments for varicose veins administered by our specialized vein doctors. Most involve a combination of vein ablation and sclerotherapy to treat both the painful and cosmetic effects of the disease. This is an outpatient procedure and patients are followed-up in our vascular lab to ensure adequate treatment.

What Our Patients Are Saying:

Veins and Venous Disorders

Experience the future of vein and venous disorder treatments today with Houston Vascular Care. Our team of expert interventional radiologists in Houston, TX utilizes innovative, minimally invasive techniques to provide targeted treatment and relief for various vein and venous disorders.

At Houston Vascular Care, we specialize in:

Venaseal Closure System:
The use of non-thermal ablation to get the maximum length of the treated vein. The use of this system allows for more distal access to the target vein, which may lead to shorter healing time and maximum efficiencies.

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): A gentle heat-based treatment that collapses and seals off the diseased vein, diverting blood flow to healthier veins.

Sclerotherapy: An effective treatment for smaller varicose veins and spider veins, this procedure involves injecting a solution into the diseased vein, causing it to collapse and fade from view.

Venous Stenting: Ideal for treating narrowed or blocked veins, venous stenting opens up the vein using a small, flexible tube to restore normal blood flow.

The benefits of our treatments for venous and vein disorders

Minimally invasive: Unlike traditional surgery, interventional radiology treatments for venous disease often involve small incisions, which means less pain, less scarring, and fewer complications.

Targeted treatment: We use advanced imaging techniques to guide the treatment, ensuring precision and the ability to target the disease at its source.

Speedy recovery: The recovery time is typically shorter with interventional radiology treatments compared to traditional surgery. Most patients return to their regular activities within days.

Outpatient procedures: Many of these treatments can be performed on an outpatient basis, meaning you can return home on the same day.

Effective symptom relief: Procedures such as sclerotherapy, endovenous laser therapy, and radiofrequency ablation have been shown to effectively alleviate the symptoms of venous diseases, including varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency.

Improved Quality of Life: By relieving symptoms like pain, swelling, and heaviness in the legs, these treatments can significantly improve your mobility and overall quality of life.

Lower risk of complications: Compared to traditional surgery, interventional radiology procedures have lower risks of complications such as infection, bleeding, and damage to surrounding tissues.

Preservation of Vein: In traditional surgery, the problematic vein is often removed. But in procedures like radiofrequency ablation or laser therapy, the vein is treated and left in place, which can be beneficial for future venous access if needed.

We encourage you to contact Houston Vascular Care to determine if one of these treatments is appropriate for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are varicose veins and spider veins?
  • Varicose veins are enlarged/rope-like veins that are swollen and often painful. They can be purple, blue, or skin-colored. They can occur anywhere on the legs from the groin to the foot.

  • Spider veins are similar to varicose veins but smaller and closer to the skin surface. They aren’t usually painful but can cause significant distress due to their appearance.

  • Varicose and spider veins can be a sign of an underlying vein/valve problem (venous insufficiency/venous reflux disease).

What are the signs and symptoms?

Heavy, aching, painful, or tired legs that are worsening with standing and throughout the day, itchy legs, restless leg syndrome, bleeding veins, skin discoloration

What causes varicose veins?

They are caused by abnormal valves within the veins. Veins bring blood back to the heart and when these valves fail, there can be blood backing up and pooling causing varicose veins.

What are risk factors?

Obesity, pregnancy, prolonged standing, family history, prior venous disease

How common are varicose veins and spider veins?

Approximately 50% of American suffer from some form of vein problem. Unfortunately, most people are unaware of available treatments.

What is the procedure and recovery like?

This is an outpatient procedure performed in our clinic. The procedure is performed via a tiny incision at the thigh, knee, or ankle to treat the diseased veins. The abnormal vein is blocked using thermal energy or medical grade glue. Sometimes, we use other treatments such as sclerosing agents to treat the abnormal vein. Patient’s are discharged the same day with follow-up instructions.

When do they require treatment?

When conservative therapies such as life-style modification and compression stockings do not relieve symptoms, patient’s are typically candidates for treatment after being screened with ultrasound.

Does my insurance cover treatment?

Most insurances will typically evaluation and treatment of varicose veins and venous insufficiency. If veins are treated for cosmetic reasons alone, insurance will not cover it. Please contact us for additional details and to set up a consultation.

How do I know which venous disease treatment is right for me?

Choosing the right treatment depends on the type and severity of your venous disease, as well as your overall health and personal preferences. During your consultation, our interventional radiologists will evaluate your condition, review your medical history, and discuss the most suitable treatment options to tailor a plan specifically for you.

Are the minimally invasive treatments for venous disease painful?

Minimally invasive treatments like Endovenous Laser Therapy (EVLT), Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA), and sclerotherapy are generally well-tolerated and involve minimal discomfort. Most patients experience only mild pain or a sensation of heat during the procedure, which is managed with local anesthesia. Post-procedure discomfort is usually minimal and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.

What can I expect during the recovery period after a venous disease treatment?

Recovery times vary depending on the specific procedure, but most patients can return to their normal activities within a few days. You might experience some bruising, swelling, or mild discomfort, which typically resolves within a week or two. Our team will provide detailed post-procedure care instructions to ensure a smooth and quick recovery, including wearing compression stockings and avoiding strenuous activities for a short period.
